HPV Vaccination in Out-of-school Context

HPV vaccination programs worldwide have primarily deployed school-based delivery strategies, with very little effort to reach girls who are either temporarily or permanently out of school or beyond school age.

We conducted a global synthesis of knowledge on HPV vaccination strategies designed for out-of-school girls. The review focuses on non-school delivery strategies in low- and middle-income countries for girls aged 9-19 years. With Ethiopia as a “frontrunner” country, together with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Pathfinder, Acasus, and Social Impact, we further developed an assessment tool that provides a standardized approach to identify entry points, partners, and new approaches for reaching out-of-school girls with HPV vaccinations. The tool was used for a country assessment in Ethiopia to inform the Ministry of Health and other partners on key actions and potential opportunities to co-deliver HPV vaccinations as part of existing adolescent initiatives.
